| In 1938, at a poorly marked railroad crossing in rural Indiana,
a freight train collided with an egg truck, killing the simple
black egg-farmer and his wife instantly and orphaning their
three children. The children were parceled out to relatives.
The eldest child, Mary, was sent to live with an abusive uncle
in Baltimore. Ordered by the uncle to work as a domestic at
thirteen years old, Mary endures a grueling workload at the
hands of racist estate owners by day and his mistreatment by
night. Her luck shifts when she is given a one-day assignment
at the home of a large middle class Jewish family. She immediately
senses a kindness she has never felt before. Desperate to escape
her uncle, Mary courageously asks to spend the night.
This is the story of a night that turns into fifty years.
The improbable saga of a young black girl's ascendance to
become the Matriarch of a family- not of her heritage, but
of her choice. Mary's journey cuts through race and religion
to reveal the best of what is locked in every heart- the need
to give and receive unconditional love.
